The Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs Adolf Mwesige has applauded Members of Parliament for working together with the Ministry to accomplish different tasks in the Financial Year 2018/19.

Minister Mwesige was on Wednesday officiating at the opening of a two-day annual retreat for Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs (MODVA) leaders and Members of Parliament on the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee. The retreat is taking place at Speke Resort Munyonyo. It aims at reviewing the performance of the Defence and Veteran Affairs Ministry in areas of finance, planning, policy, budgeting, human resource development, and welfare, among others.

The Minister noted that the interface provides an opportunity to reflect on the achievements and challenges of the year ending 2018/19 and coin mechanisms that can be followed to fill the gaps. “Cooperation with the Defence Ministry ensures that security prevails throughout the country for socio-economic development,” he noted.

Mwesige added that the presence of Members of Parliament at this year’s interface is a clear manifestation that there is cooperation between the three arms of the state; the executive, legislature and judiciary on matters of defence and security, which he says are key in achieving the country’s prosperity and transformation.

The chairperson of the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee in Parliament Doreen Amule, who is the Woman MP representing Amolatar District lauded UPDF for its good work and great sacrifice in providing peace and security. She said the interface will help in projecting the future by correctly answering questions concerning the achievements and challenges of the Defence Ministry, adding that it will also help in laying strategies for better performance.

The interface also covered the overall security situation in the country, recent troop recruitment and trainings as well as AMISOM operations, among others.
