Twenty-one (21) Ugandan truck drivers have tested positive for Coronavirus ahead of President Yoweri Museveni’s 14th presidential address on Tuesday evening.

According to the Ministry of Health, the 21 new cases are from 1,071 samples that were tested from various points of entry on May 17.

“The 21 confirmed cases are Ugandan nationals; 17 from Elegu Point of entry, 3 from Mutukula point of entry, and 1 from Malaba point of entry. All 253 community samples tested negative for COVID-19. The total number of tests done were 1,324. The total number of COVID-19 confirmed cases is now 248,” said Dr Henry Mwebesa, Director General Health Services in a statement.

President Museveni is tomorrow at 8 pm expected to make his 14th address to the nation as the 14day lockdown extension comes to an end on Tuesday.

According to Don Wanyama, the Presidential press secretary, the address will be preceded with a cabinet meeting that will agree on the way forward.

On Sunday, the Ministry of Health did not release results of tested samples following the Presidential directive of only allowing truck drivers who test negative into the country.

“Additionally, all truck drivers must undergo COVID-19 testing and receive results before proceeding to immigration at the borders. Foreign truck drivers who test positive for COVI-19 are advised to return to their place of origin for treatment while Ugandan truck drivers will be admitted at the various hospitals for treatment,” Dr. Mwebesa said.
