Bernard Atiku resigned from his role as the Minister for Defence and Veteran affairs in the shadow cabinet.

Atiku confirmed his resignation by phone, saying the move was prompted by his plan to realign his political allegiance.

"I'm realigning my political allegiance," he told me when I asked why bowed out.

"I thought it was the right time to tender in my resignation so that I can prepare to shift my political allegiance."

Atiku did not reveal the political party he would be joining, promising to announce "that very soon".

He represents Ayivu county in parliament and he won the seat in 2011 on the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) ticket.

He would later fall out with the party's leadership in Arua, following which he contested as an Independent in 2016. During these elections, he campaigned for President Museveni.

In 2017, he engaged in a public fight with the late MP lbrahim Abiriga over the controversial 'age limit' debate in Parliament

He'll always be remembered for his notable contribution in the amendment of the Children's Act that was signed into law by President
Museveni recently.

The Leader of Opposition Betty Aol Ochan who received Atiku's resignation letter did not respond to requests for comment.
