Workers’ MP Sam Lyomoki is unlikely to return in the 11th Parliament after NRM top leadership hatched plot to ditch the rebellious MP.

The controversial MP has been representing workers at Parliament since 1996, but has finally fallen out of NRM’s favour. Despite being NRM, Lyomoki has been very controversial and ‘rebellious’ to most decisions of the Party that he subscribes to.

The latest is that NRM top management has decided to fail him when the workers union sits to vote for special interests groups on September 10th, 2020. The current Workers’ MPs in the 10th Parliament are; Arinaitwe Rwakajara, Charles Bakkabulindi, Margaret Rwabushaija, Agnes Kunihira and Sam Lyomoki. Apparently, the Workers’ Union has resolved to retain four Workers’ MPs with the exception of Sam Lyomoki on grounds that he has been constantly rebellious. At one moment, Lyomoki threatened to contest against NRM Party chairperson Yoweri Museveni for presidency. Also, he was against the removal of presidential age limit.

According to insiders, Lyomoki has turned into a ‘drama king’ and the NRM Party feels betrayed by his actions because he continuously hobnobs with the opposition. Last month, Lyomoki reportedly slept in the parliamentary chambers protesting what he described as the delayed passing of the National Social Security (NSSF) Amendment Bill.

Members of the public have been pushing for the passing of the NSSF Bill to enable them get 20% of their savings to cushion them from the economic hardships created by the COVID-19 economic crisis.

However, President Yoweri Museveni recently met MPs on the committee that has been handling the Bill and cautioned them against the proposal for the 20% payment to NSSF members, arguing that it could negatively affect NSSF.
