President Museveni has said young people that are casting doubts on the potential of NRM to execute on its promises don’t understand the ruling party’s history.

The president, who is also the party chairman, was responding to comments on social media claiming that the NRM would use its power to cover up for powerful people like the labor minister Mwesigwa Rukutana who were involved in election violence in the recently concluded NRM Member of Parliament primaries.

“With the Confident Hon. Rukutana and others, the skepticism of some responders such as Kagaba, pmneyponsi, Joel, Arthur Lukyamuzi and others that they suspect that the NRM will cover them up, it is because these young people do not know the history of the NRM/ NRA and how it brought peace to Uganda for the first time in 500 years,” he said.

According to Museveni, the stability brought about by the NRM government has made this generation so comfortable that when the Covid-19 pandemic struck the country, directing them to follow guidelines to fend off the virus was seen as suppression of freedom.

“The Bazzukulu have grown up in total peace and freedom and until COVID-19 came in to suppress their free lives of ebikeesa (transnights), ebimansulo (naked shows), games, music concerts etc., they were living uninhibited lifestyles,” he said.

“The freedom was brought about by the firmness and pro-People position of the NRM against wrong-doers. That is why the Bazzukulu, rightly, see the few actions of mistake making LDUs as terrible. In the past, dead bodies floating on the River Nile or dumped in Namanve were non- events.”

The minister, his three escorts and a driver are still in prison on charges of inciting violence, attempted murder by shooting, and malicious damage of property.

A day after the minister’s arrest, the president took to social media saying that he would go through all law procedures as stipulated in the constitution.

“The cheating in the NRM Primaries is over. Those who beat People, like in Bukono, are all in jail or on the run. Minister Rukutana is in jail and will be prosecuted. They will be fully accountable with robust charges: assault, attempted murder, murder etc,” Museveni said.
