President Yoweri Museveni, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) presidential candidate, has been duly nominated to contest in the 2021 presidential election.
Museveni arrived for nomination in Kyambogo in the company of 10 people as stipulated by the Electoral Commission.
He was received by the EC chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama.
The president thanked his nominators, "the two young people, Nassur Gaddafi and Hellen Seku."
"I also thank the rest of my entourage led by the NRM vice-chairperson Al-Hajj Moses Kigongo and the Secretary General, Justine Lumumba. Special gratitude to our supporters in the districts who signed my endorsement forms," said Mr Museveni after being nominated.
He also emphasised measures against the Covid-19 pandemic and security.
"Covid-19 is deadly and is killing our people. In recent days, among others, we lost an environment expert, Paul Mafabi, and my good friend, Francis Xavier Kitaka, the veterinary expert and entrepreneur.
Do not take this disease lightly. The talk that the villages are insulated from Covid-19 is false. Please follow all guidelines of health experts. Sanitize, wear masks and observe social distancing," Mr Museveni noted.
He also encouraged everybody to maintain peace.
"I hear talk that some people want to cause chaos. Those plans will not succeed. Anyone planning mischief will fail. No one should threaten Ugandans with chaos," Mr Museveni said.
Earlier, Mr Museveni thanked his party-the NRM for trusting him to represent them in the next presidential election.
"Thank you, NRM for putting confidence in me. I am preparing for nomination this morning and our manifesto launch later today. It's the D-day. Remember, this is about securing your future," Museveni tweeted on Monday morning, ahead of his nomination.
Moments earlier, the Police issued traffic guidelines to be followed by road users on Monday and Tuesday.
The Police warned that Kyambogo Cricket Grounds, the presidential nomination centre, would only be accessible by people accredited by the Electoral Commission (EC).
According to the Kampala Metropolitan Traffic Commander, Norman Musinga, traffic flow along routes leading to and from Kyambogo University will be diverted at Spear Motors, Banda trading centre, Kireka trading centre, Kigobe road at the National Council for Higher Education and at Jokas hotel in Bweyogerere.
"Kyambogo cricket ground (presidential nomination centre) will only be accessible to presidential aspirants, their recommended number of people accredited by EC and EC officials. The accredited VIPs will access the nomination centre through Kyambogo road, Kyambogo University western gate, and park as will be directed by traffic," Musinga said in a statement issued over the weekend.
