The Ambassador of Ireland to Uganda William Carlos on Tuesday met with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Patrick Mugoya and the duo hashed over a number of issues.

According to the ministry’s public diplomacy department, the Irish Ambassador assured the permanent secretary that his government will facilitate the process to strengthen economic and political ties between the European Union (EU) and Uganda.

The European Union and Uganda have partnered in development for more than four decades now since the start of diplomatic relations in 1975.

The duo’s relationship is focused on countering collective global challenges, namely: climate change, peace and security, migration, job creation, economic growth, human development, and many others.

In 2018, Uganda recorded a positive trade balance with the EU, exporting goods worth Shs2.1 trillion ($560million) to the EU market while importing goods worth Shs1.9 trillion ($530) from the EU.

During the meeting, according to the diplomacy department, Mugoya and Carlos discussed matters of bilateral importance to the two countries.

They called for promotion and support of peace and security initiatives in the region given Ireland’s membership to the UN Security Council.

The two principals concluded the meeting by encouraging increased bilateral cooperation in form of exchanges of high-level delegation visits both at technical and political levels between the two counties, the department said in a statement.
