The 59th Independence Day Anniversary celebration has been restricted to less than 600 invited guests, according to State Minister for Economic Monitoring, Peter Ogwang.
The Theme for this year’s cerebrations will be: Celebrating our 59th Independence Day as we secure our Future through National Mindset Change’.
While addressing the media, Minister Ogwang said that this year’s Independence Day celebration will be celebrated ‘scientifically’ as it has been the case last year. This year’s celebration will host 600 guests.
“The rest of Ugandans will quietly celebrate from their homes. The activities in Kololo will be relayed live on all major televisions and radios and therefore people are advised to watch the proceedings from the comfort of their homes,” Ogwang said. The chief Guest will be H.E the president of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the functions begin at 11:00am.
Ogwang said that despite a few challenges, the NRM government has registered strides as compared to the pre and post-colonial era especially in the sectors of Education, Health, Agriculture, ICT, Economic Infrastructure and others.
“In these 59 years of Independence, we have done a lot to build the economic and administrative capacity to implement the development decisions we rightly make as a free nation, and as a free people. We have addressed the intellectual capacity of our people in terms of building a knowledge and skill base through education,” he said.
Currently, there are 10million pupils who are enrolled in Primary education compared to about 2.5 million in 1989 and over 2 million students in secondary schools with 53 universities, 9 of them are public and 44 are private.
