Uganda’s industrialist and Nkumba University Chancellor, Emmanuel Katongole, has been elected as Rotary International Director Nominee Designate during the Rotary Conference in Mauritius. Katongole’s election is a recognition of his lifelong commitment to community development, global progress, and humanitarian service.
“His election as Rotary International Director underscores his unwavering commitment to service, both in Uganda and globally,” noted Rotarian Mike Sebalu. Sebalu further emphasized that Katongole’s leadership comes at a time when Rotary International is focusing on intensifying efforts to promote humanitarian service, economic growth, and global peace.
Katongole, co-founder and Chairman of Quality Chemical Industries Ltd (QCIL), has played a significant role in the transformation of the pharmaceutical industry in Africa. Under his leadership, QCIL transitioned from focusing on animal health to addressing critical health needs on the continent by producing affordable medicines. Katongole’s leadership extended beyond Uganda's borders as he chaired key international and local organizations.
In 2020, President Yoweri Museveni appointed Katongole to chair Uganda’s National Response Fund on Covid-19, where he led the country’s pandemic response efforts. His contributions also earned him the prestigious Papal Knight honor from Pope Francis in 2021, recognizing his extensive community service.
Katongole’s involvement in Rotary spans decades, starting from his local club, the Rotary Club of Muyenga. He rose through the ranks to serve as District Governor for Uganda and Tanzania, and has held prominent roles on a global scale. His dedication to service is reflected in his involvement in over 20 Rotary International Conventions and numerous district conferences.
A philanthropist and humanitarian, Katongole was instrumental in establishing the Mengo Hospital Rotary Blood Bank and played a key role in founding the Makerere University Rotary Peace Center. His contributions to Rotary, business, and humanitarian causes have earned him numerous accolades, including the Ernst and Young East African Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2013.
Katongole’s leadership within Rotary International is expected to inspire Rotarians worldwide as he continues to champion humanitarian efforts across the globe.
