The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the World Food Programme (WFP) have launched an eco-friendly office block in Kampala, designed to enhance environmental stewardship. The state-of-the-art facility, located in Mbuya, is built on principles of green design and resource efficiency, positioning Uganda as a regional leader in sustainable development.

Speaking at the unveiling, State Minister for Regional Affairs John Mulimba, representing President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, hailed the project as a “milestone” in promoting a healthier environment. “At this crucial moment, we’re consolidating our achievements and looking towards the future,” Mulimba stated. He emphasized that partnerships with organizations like UNICEF and WFP are essential for breaking down barriers to sustainable development and creating a brighter future for Uganda.

The new facility, sitting on 2.8 acres, boasts numerous eco-friendly features, including 80% solar-powered energy, rainwater harvesting, and on-site waste treatment. It is designed to reduce energy consumption by 46% through green building technologies and includes wellness amenities, gender-sensitive services, and full accessibility for persons with disabilities. The building demonstrates how development can be achieved without depleting natural resources.

“This eco-friendly office block is a testament to our joint efforts to address climate change and promote sustainable development,” said Abdirahman Meygag, WFP Representative in Uganda. Meygag noted that the building reflects the UN’s commitment to environmental responsibility and green growth, aligning with Uganda’s Vision 2040.

UNICEF’s Representative to Uganda, Dr. Munir A. Safieldin, highlighted the importance of this collaboration for Uganda’s long-term development goals. “We will continue to support Uganda’s green growth agenda,” he said, pointing to existing joint initiatives such as school feeding programs and malnutrition prevention in Karamoja.

The new office block not only represents the UN’s global sustainability goals but also serves as a model for future developments in Uganda. As Uganda advances in its environmental sustainability efforts, this project signals the country’s growing leadership in promoting green growth and climate change mitigation.

Mulimba urged continued collaboration for future projects: “Together, we can create a lasting legacy for Uganda’s children and communities, built on hope, resilience, and solidarity.”

This eco-friendly office marks a new chapter in Uganda’s sustainable development, showcasing the benefits of partnerships between international organizations and the Ugandan government, as they work towards a greener and more resilient future.
