President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has commended a group of former National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters who renounced opposition politics, pledging government support for their reintegration into society.

Meeting the converts at Kololo Independence Grounds on Thursday, September 25, 2025, the President praised them for “realizing their mistakes” and turning away from what he described as “misleading opposition politics.” He assured them of forgiveness and urged them to focus on building productive lives through government programs.

“I also congratulate the former prisoners for realizing their mistakes and turning away from misleading opposition politics, thereby earning our forgiveness,” Museveni said. He accused some leaders in NUP and sections of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) of pushing youth into danger and “resulting in unnecessary deaths,” arguing that they “really have nothing to offer.”

The President advised the converts to explore opportunities in four priority sectors: commercial agriculture, artisanship and industry, services, and ICT. He also confirmed that government would study a memorandum presented by the group. “What I urge them to do is focus on building better lives through the different government programs,” he added.

One of the converts, Muhydin Sanya, a former NUP supporter, shared his experience of imprisonment. “I was in prison for 4 years because we wanted to sabotage the country. We cried out to President Museveni, and he forgave us,” he said.

The event marked another push by the National Resistance Movement (NRM) to draw opposition members into its fold, with Museveni framing the move as part of a broader strategy to ensure national unity and youth empowerment.
