Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga has gifted major mosques in Kampala ahead of the Eid Al- Fitr celebrations over the weekend.
On Friday, Imam of Parliament, Latif Ssebaggala (Kawempe North) who represented the Speaker led a delegation from Parliament where they handed over Eid hampers to Kibuli and Old Kampala Mosques.
MP Ssebaggala was accompanied by Ismail Ranny, the Assistant Director, Communications and Public Affairs at Parliament.
At Kibuli Mosque, Parliament gave out 400kgs of wheat, 200kgs of posho, 200kg of rice, 200litres of cooking oil and 200kgs of sugar. The items were handed over to the Supreme Mufti of Uganda Sheikh Siliman Kasule Ndirangwa.
Sheikh Ndirangwa thanked Speaker Kadaga and the entire Parliament for the generosity.
"We thank the Speaker for the generous contribution. We thought a woman could not steer Parliament but she has disapproved her doubters," Ndirangwa said.
He however, condemned the alleged torture and mistreatment of some MPs by security forces and asked Parliament to stand firm and fight for the rights of the people.
Parliament also gifted Prince Kassim Nakibinge Kakungulu with 100kgs of wheat,100kgs of rice,100kgs of posho, 100kgs of sugar and 100litres of cooking oil.
Every year, Parliament hosts Iftar Dinner at Parliament where they host various Muslim leaders.
MP Ssebaggala said that this year, it has not been possible to hold Iftar dinner at Parliament due to COVID-19 pandemic.
"This year we have not done so (hosted Iftar) because of COVID-19. That is why the Speaker decided to give out the hampers as a way of cementing relationship with the office of the speaker," Ssebaggala said.
The Parliament delegation led by Ranny Ismail also visited and gifted the leadership of Old Kampala Mosque where they handed over 300kgs of sugar, 300kgs of rice, 300litres of oil, 300kgs of wheat and 300kgs of posho.
According to Ranny, the leadership from the mosques will distribute the hampers among themselves including the vulnerable Muslims.
On Wednesday, Kadaga handed over Eid hampers to Muslim journalists and Parliament staff. The gift hampers were distributed to 39 staff, 24 police officers, 20 support staff and 108 journalists.
