Police in Mbarara district on Thursday night apprehended six people, including Daniel Kananura, who is vying to represent Kashari North constituency in Parliament.
Kananura, according to police, was arrested alongside Benon Arinaitwe, an NRM registrar for Ruhumba Ward in Rubindi town council; Rogers Mugisha, an NRM registrar for Kashare sub-county; Juvenile Katusiime, an NRM registrar for Rubindi town council; and two of his supporters Pascal Nkahirwa and Denis Musinguzi.
They were found in Itamba Guest House in Rwebikona Mbarara City holding a meeting beyond curfew hours, police said. They spent the night in a holding cell at Mbarara Central Police Station. They were taken there at 11pm.
"The six persons are on a standing charge of disobedience of lawful orders vide SD ref 02/04/09/2020 as investigations continue into the matter," police said.
According to police, "the district NRM chairman stood surety for all the six and they were released on police bond as inquiries into the matter continue".
NRM is today conducting primary elections to elect MP flag-bearers and and for this specific county, on the ballot, there is Baziri Bataringaya, former disctrict councilor in charge of finance; Yaguma Rutashokwa, the incumbent; Jude Bakunda; Moses Nuwagaba, former RDC; and Grace Muhirwe Kyakonko.
