Uganda has inaugurated its first public electric vehicle (EV) charging station at Amber House in Kampala to foster sustainable transport. Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Dr. Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu, launched the facility, emphasizing the need for accessible and affordable EV infrastructure to drive electric mobility.
The government plans to pilot ten charging stations within the Kampala Metropolitan area to support the transition to green transport. Nankabirwa acknowledged private sector contributions from Zembo Electric, Gogo, and Kiira Motors in advancing electric vehicle adoption.
She also highlighted Uganda’s broader energy efficiency initiatives, including regulatory frameworks, industrial energy audits, and the promotion of efficient cooking appliances. “We are committed to sustainable transport and global climate goals,” she said, urging stakeholders to embrace electric mobility.
The launch aligns with Uganda’s National Development Plan IV, positioning the country for a cleaner and energy-efficient future.
