A heavy downpour in Kampala and Wakiso on Wednesday morning, March 26, 2025, has left many communities in distress.

The rain, which began around 5 am and continued through midmorning, caused widespread flooding in several suburbs. Residents faced difficulties commuting to the city, with many main roads cut off.

Reports indicate that homes and bridges were destroyed. In Kulambiro, a woman whose house perimeter wall collapsed was seen in tears, calling for help.

“Our entire house is flooded. My kitchen is gone. The power is off, but if it returns, we could get electrocuted,” she said.

The Uganda Police issued an advisory, warning that a large section of Jinja Road was impassable. They advised travellers to use the Kampala Northern Bypass instead.

"Due to heavy rainfall early this morning, flooding has been reported in Banda, Kyambogo, and Kinawataka (Katogo). As a result, the Traffic Police advise all road users to use the Northern Bypass to avoid disruptions," said Luke Owotesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesman. "We apologise for any inconvenience caused."

However, parts of the Bypass were also flooded, according to Allan Ssempebwa, a spokesman at the Ministry of Works and Transport.

“Heavy rains this morning have caused flooding along sections of the Kampala Northern Bypass, particularly around Kyebando and Sentema-Namungoona,” he said. “Motorists, especially those with low-clearance vehicles, are advised to avoid these areas and use alternative routes. Drive with caution, and stay safe!”
