Uganda was welcomed as a Partner State in the BRICS group during the BRICS Foreign Minister’s Meeting held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from April 28 to 29, 2025. The event sets the stage for the BRICS Leaders' Summit in July, where Uganda's new role is expected to enhance its global standing.
In response to this invitation, Uganda's Foreign Minister, Odongo Jeje Abubakhar, pledged the country's dedication to promoting the core values of BRICS, particularly those that champion the interests of the Global South. This commitment is in line with Uganda's ongoing efforts to strengthen its role in international diplomacy and solidarity with developing nations.
While in Rio de Janeiro, Abubakhar engaged in a fruitful bilateral discussion with Brazilian Foreign Minister, Mauro Vieira. The two exchanged views on a range of issues, both bilateral and international, with a focus on fostering greater cooperation between Uganda and Brazil. Minister Vieira expressed optimism about Uganda’s contributions to BRICS, viewing it as a valuable partner with the potential to drive positive change within the group.
Both sides agreed on the importance of reinforcing bilateral ties and developing a strategic roadmap for future diplomatic initiatives. This partnership promises to bring about strengthened relations and increased collaboration between Uganda and Brazil.
