The Uganda Police has issued a stern warning to motorists to observe new speed limits as enforcement of the Traffic and Road Safety (Prescription of Speed Limits) Regulations, 2024 begins across the country.
Speaking in Kampala, Police Traffic Directorate spokesperson Faridah Nampiima reminded the public that ignorance of the law is not a defence for offenders.
“Ignorance of the law is no excuse. Let’s pick something here, it might save you tomorrow,” Nampiima said.
She outlined the new regulations, noting that the maximum speed on urban roads is now 30km/h. Highways passing through urban areas have been capped at 50km/h for both vehicles and motorcycles.
For paved roads, speed limits range from 30km/h to 90km/h, depending on the type of vehicle. Motorcycles are limited to 60km/h. On gravel roads, vehicles may travel between 30km/h and 60km/h, while motorcycles are restricted to 30km/h.
All community access roads carry a uniform limit of 30km/h. Expressways and dual carriageways now have limits between 40km/h and 100km/h, based on vehicle classification.
Nampiima warned that violators will face legal consequences. “A person who contravenes any provision in the regulation commits an offence and can be held liable upon conviction,” she said.
She urged the public to embrace the new measures for their own safety. “Road safety is everyone’s responsibility. Slowing down significantly reduces the severity of accidents and saves lives,” Nampiima added.
The police have intensified nationwide enforcement operations to ensure compliance with the revised regulations.
