The National Resistance Movement (NRM) politician Amelia Kyambadde has reclaimed the Mawokota North parliamentary seat after her defeat in the 2021 elections.
The Electoral Commission declared Kyambadde the Member of Parliament–elect after she defeated musician-turned-politician Hilary Kiyaga, popularly known as Dr Hilderman. The contest drew national attention during the 2026 election cycle.
Kyambadde, a former Minister for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, had lost the seat to Kiyaga in 2021 after he crossed from campaigning alongside her to contesting on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket. Her loss then was widely viewed as part of the broader decline of NRM support in Buganda.
Following the 2021 defeat, Kyambadde conceded and briefly stepped back from elective politics, citing voter fatigue linked to prolonged incumbency. Her return in 2026 was framed within NRM circles as a bid to re-energise the party’s grassroots structures in Mawokota North and restore confidence among longtime supporters.
The victory not only restores Kyambadde to Parliament but also adds to a pattern of political comebacks by experienced NRM figures seeking to reassert the party’s influence at constituency level.
Her win closes one of the most closely watched contests in central Uganda.
