Commanding Officers and Legal Advisors of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) have begun a two-week training course in Jinja aimed at strengthening coordination and improving the application of law in military operations.
The training, taking place at the Legal Training Centre in Jinja, brings together selected officers from different UPDF units to enhance collaboration between commanders and legal advisors.
While opening the course, Jinja Cantonment Commander Emmanuel Kanyesigye called on commanders to ensure discipline and proper conduct among troops.
“Our officers must always guide the troops under their command on how to conduct themselves in daily duties, whether during operations at home or on international missions,” Brig Gen Kanyesigye said.
The training focuses on aligning operational decisions with legal frameworks, especially in modern military environments where legal compliance plays a critical role.
Commandant of the centre, Sam Wako, said the participants were carefully selected to strengthen teamwork between legal advisors and field commanders.
“This training is intended to harmonise the working relationship between commanders and legal advisors in contemporary operations where the application of law has become increasingly critical across operational theatres,” Maj Wako said.
UPDF and external instructors are facilitating the sessions, which are expected to equip officers with practical skills to handle legal aspects of military operations.
The initiative reflects the army’s efforts to enhance professionalism and ensure adherence to legal standards in both domestic and international deployments.
