Officers of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) have made significant progress in Russian language training, as a delegation from Russia assessed the programme at the School of Defence Intelligence and Security in Nakasongola District.
The training, conducted at School of Defence Intelligence and Security (SODIS) in Migeera, is the first one-year Russian language programme of its kind in Uganda.
Participants are drawn from key UPDF formations, including the Armoured Division, Artillery Division, Special Forces Command, and Defence Intelligence and Security.

Chief Instructor Richard Ssejemba said the programme is strengthening operational coordination within the force.
“This training ensures our forces can operate seamlessly in joint missions, peacekeeping operations, and humanitarian efforts,” Lt Col Ssejemba said.
The visiting Russian delegation was led by Vitaly Dimenko, who described the initiative as a sign of growing cooperation between the two countries.
“Our willingness to share knowledge and skills is a testament to the strong bond between Russia and Uganda. We are committed to sponsoring students for advanced Russian language training,” Col Dimenko said.

Russian Chief Instructor Oksana Vasilieve praised the officers for their dedication and rapid progress.
“The officers are learning at an impressive speed. Their commitment, coupled with the support of the school leadership, has made this success possible,” she said.
The delegation also included senior Russian defence officials such as Sergey Marchuk, Nicolai Boiko, and Aleksei Razuvanov.
Officials say the programme is expected to enhance interoperability and strengthen collaboration in joint operations and international engagements.
