Uganda Pushes Conflict Prevention Agenda in Talks with UN Genocide Advisor

The meeting focused on regional peace and security

Uganda’s Foreign Affairs Minister Okello Oryem met UN adviser Chaloka Beyani to discuss conflict prevention, regional peace efforts, and the situation in Sudan.

State Minister for International Affairs Henry Okello Oryem has met Chaloka Beyani, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The meeting focused on regional peace and security. The two officials discussed ways to strengthen systems that support peaceful resolution of disputes and prevent armed conflict that can lead to genocide.

Oryem told Beyani that Uganda remains committed to preventing conflict. He said the country continues to push for practical and results-driven solutions. He noted that despite Uganda’s role in peace efforts in Somalia and South Sudan, some actors in the international community have spread misleading claims about its contribution.

He said Uganda will continue to support peace efforts through the United Nations, the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region, and bilateral partnerships.

The two also discussed the situation in Sudan. They reviewed ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict and restoring peace. They stressed the need for inclusive dialogue among all parties. They called for strong support to regional peace processes to ensure lasting stability.

They also agreed on the need to strengthen justice systems at both national and regional levels. This, they said, will help ensure accountability for war crimes and improve access to justice for victims.

Beyani was appointed by António Guterres in August 2025. He is based at the United Nations headquarters in New York. He is currently on a regional mission to consult key stakeholders involved in peace processes. He will continue his mission in South Sudan, where he is expected to meet senior government officials and other stakeholders.
