The Ugandan government has launched Postcom, a digital shopping platform designed to integrate local commerce with the national postal network.
Posta Uganda unveiled the initiative during a press conference at the Uganda Media Centre on Wednesday. The platform allows individuals and businesses to list goods and services for sale to a nationwide audience. Posta Uganda will utilize its existing logistics infrastructure to deliver purchased items efficiently.
Posta Uganda Managing Director Mr. James Arinaitwe described the move as a strategic modernization of the country's oldest logistics entity. He noted that the post office must evolve to remain relevant in a digital-first economy.
“The post office is not going away. Even 100 years from now, it will still be there, but delivering different kinds of services,” Mr. James Arinaitwe said.
The marketplace is inclusive of both physical products and professional services like consulting. Mr. James Arinaitwe clarified that while the system connects buyers and sellers, the primary goal is to facilitate ease of trade. He highlighted the accessibility of the new digital tool for small-scale entrepreneurs.
“If you have goods to sell, even small items, put them on the platform. We will connect you with buyers and deliver them wherever they are,” he added.
The Board Chairperson of Posta Uganda, Mr. Balyejjusa Sulaiman Kirunda, linked the launch to broader national economic goals. He stated that digital transformation is now a prerequisite for substantial economic growth. The chairperson believes the platform will specifically improve household incomes by opening wider markets for locally made products.
“We cannot grow the economy without going digital,” Mr. Balyejjusa Sulaiman Kirunda emphasized.
The Ministry of ICT and National Guidance provided the technical support and technology required to build the system. Hon. Godfrey Baluku Kabyanja, the Minister of State for Information, Communication Technology, and National Guidance, confirmed that Postcom will collaborate with various government agencies.
The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) will supervise and regulate the platform's content. This oversight ensures that only acceptable services are offered and that digital transactions remains secure for all users.
