A Somali minister has praised Ugandan troops for helping improve security in Barawe and urged them to keep up the fight against Al-Shabaab.
Mohamed Osman Mohamed, the fisheries and blue economy minister for Somalia’s South West State, made the remarks during a visit to the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) Battle Group 45 headquarters at Embresso in Barawe District.
The Ugandan troops serve under the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). Mohamed met their commander, Col Dr Justus Musenene, and said residents could see the results of the troops’ work.
“We acknowledge the good job you are doing here in Somalia, especially in the Barawe Sub-Sector. Your efforts are visible and the people are enjoying the benefits of security,” Mohamed said.
He urged the troops to maintain their morale and continue operations against Al-Shabaab. He also called for stronger cooperation between Uganda and Somalia.
Musenene briefed the minister on security and AUSSOM operations in the area. He said the troops remained committed to their mission and urged Somalis to settle disputes peacefully.
Barawe District leaders and UPDF officers accompanied the minister.
