Uganda outlined its railway development plans and investment opportunities at the Global Rail Transport Infrastructure Conference in Abu Dhabi last week.
Fred Byamukama, Minister of State for Works and Transport (Transport), led the delegation, joined by senior ministry officials. He highlighted ongoing railway sector reforms and stressed Uganda’s commitment to modernising rail infrastructure to boost trade and regional connectivity.
During bilateral meetings, Etihad Rail, the UAE’s national railway company, expressed readiness to support the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) extension. The line will run from Naivasha, Kenya, through Uganda, to Juba, South Sudan, providing a vital link for integration and smoother movement of goods and people across the region.
Byamukama also joined a high-level panel titled 'Building Connected Nations: The Role of Transport and Infrastructure in Sustainable Development.' The session examined how transport infrastructure can drive economic growth and sustainable regional development.
The conference brought together global railway stakeholders, giving Uganda a platform to attract partnerships and investment for its ambitious railway agenda.
