Thirty youth leaders in Napak District have received hands-on training in entrepreneurship, SACCO management, and income generation as part of a government-backed initiative to foster economic empowerment and peace in the Karamoja sub-region.
The training, held at Napak District Headquarters, was facilitated by the Microfinance Support Centre and local cooperative leaders. It aimed to equip young leaders—known locally as Karacuna—with the skills needed to run sustainable enterprises and manage financial resources effectively.
Napak Resident District Commissioner Milton Odongo urged the participants to lead by example in promoting peace and productivity. “I urge you to properly utilize the Shs 50 million grant provided by the government. It’s your entry into the money economy. You were prioritized—now go and spread the message of peace and pursue viable enterprises,” he said.
Brigadier General Wilberforce Sserunkuma, Commander of the UPDF 3rd Infantry Division, donated two bulls to support SACCO-led agricultural projects. He called on the youth to become role models for others still susceptible to negative influences. He also encouraged local leaders to intensify mobilisation and raise awareness about government poverty eradication programs.
Napak District Chairperson Kodet Paul praised the youth for turning away from cattle rustling. He described the shift as a major step forward in ensuring long-term stability in the region. He stressed the need for continued communication and unity among the youth to maintain the peace.
Lydia Nambuya, Zonal Manager of the Microfinance Support Centre in Moroto, reaffirmed the Centre’s dedication to improving SACCO operations. She advised the youth to mobilise resources and secure office space to enhance organisational efficiency.
The session attracted participation from district officials, security leaders, and technical staff, reflecting strong support for youth-led development in Napak.
