President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has pledged government support for veterans, including improved medical care and housing assistance, as Uganda marked the 36th Heroes Day Anniversary on June 9, 2025.

The national celebrations took place at Lyantonde Technical Institute Playgrounds, under the theme “The Legacy and Ideals of Our Heroes: A Memorable Inspiration.” The event was organized by the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs (MODVA) and the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF).

In his address, President Museveni saluted the veterans and communities that supported the resistance struggle that brought the current government to power.

“I want to salute the fighters who stood firm for the resistance movement for their dedication and bravery. I also want to salute the people of this area who supported us in the struggle,” the President said.

He announced a shift in the provision of veterans’ medical care from private hospitals to Entebbe Grade B Hospital, citing cost concerns.

“I’ve now told my people that everything should be put in Entebbe Grade B Hospital so that my fellow fighters are treated there, because the money we are spending at Nakasero is too much,” he said.

President Museveni also proposed a new model of housing support, where the government would provide construction materials and veterans’ families would contribute bricks and labour.

“This way, we can solve one problem at a time, instead of spreading resources too thin,” he said.

He recalled earlier efforts to honour veterans, including a 2008 initiative where each of the 800 invited resistance leaders received Shs5 million, and non-leader supporters were given Shs1 million in recognition of their role during the liberation war.

The President further pledged to review the Ministry of Luweero Triangle and Rwenzori budget to ensure it better addresses the veterans’ needs.

Alice Kaboyo, State Minister for Luweero Triangle and Rwenzori Affairs, praised the President’s continued support for veterans. She highlighted the Ministry’s success in implementing income-generating projects.

“In the Financial Year 2024/2025, we have supported over 300 income-generating enterprises through the Micro-Projects Programme,” she said.

Minister Kaboyo also noted progress in enhancing security through the establishment of Police Posts in every sub-county. She said this would create a safer environment for economic growth at the grassroots.

She pointed to a series of Pre-Heroes Day activities, introduced three years ago, aimed at engaging the youth and preserving the history of the liberation struggle. These include medical camps, youth sports events, tree planting, and inter-denominational prayers.

“These activities aim to raise awareness of our history and pass it on to the youth who did not experience the struggle,” she said.

During the ceremony, 50 individuals received national awards in recognition of their service to the country. Among them was Deputy Chief of Defence Forces, Lt Gen Sam Okiding, who was awarded the Kabalega Star Medal.
