National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) suspended operations at its office in Wakiso district after a case of Covid-19 was recorded at the Authority's office.
"The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) would like to inform the public that following the screening tests conducted at our various offices, one (01) police personnel attached to the NIRA Wakiso District Office has tested positive for COVID-19 and is currently under case management," NIRA announced in a Wednesday statement, adding that operations will resume on Sept. 16.
"As we manage the situation, the NIRA Wakiso District Office has been temporarily closed to avoid any possible further spread of infections and will be reopened to the public on Wednesday 16th September 2020 once the premises have been disinfected in line with the Ministry of Health Guidelines."
According to the statement, the closure of the office means activities like issuance of Nationa IDS, birth and death certificates, fresh registrations for National IDs and replacement of lost, defaced and damaged National ID cards have been suspended.
NIRA has advised people to contact other branches in cases of urgent need.
"Clients may however access all other services from any other NIRA office nearest to them EXCEPT National ID card issuance for those who registered at the Wakiso office," reads the statement. "We wish to encourage our clients and members of the public to continue observing the COVID-19 SOPs and take the necessary precautionary measures stipulated by the Ministry of Health to reduce the spread of infections, protect families and save lives."

Uganda has so far recorded 4101 cases of the respiratory illness, 1876 recoveries and 46 deaths.
