Senior government and military officials have called on residents of Karenga District in Northern Karamoja to embrace peace as a cornerstone for achieving socio-economic progress. During a security and community engagement meeting in Kawalakol Sub County, the leaders highlighted peace as essential for stabilizing the region, which has been plagued by insecurity.

The engagement, held following security threats against locals after the killing of a notorious warrior, Issa Lokuria, by joint security forces, was aimed at addressing the concerns of the community and reinforcing security measures in North Karamoja.

Hon. Akello Rose Lilly, Karenga’s Woman Member of Parliament and State Minister for Ethics and Integrity, urged residents to support the government’s efforts to improve livelihoods in the region. "I urge you to stay vigilant and report any criminal activities, as the government continues implementing programs like the Parish Development Model (PDM) and Emyooga to transform lives," Akello said. She also assured residents that the government is taking steps to mitigate human-wildlife conflicts by installing an electric fence around Kidepo Valley National Park.

Maj. Gen. Don William Nabasa, Commander of the UPDF’s 3rd Infantry Division, called on armed individuals to surrender their weapons through the Amnesty Window, warning that those who refuse will face firm action. “We use technology to track criminals, so anyone seeking revenge should target us, the security forces, and not innocent civilians,” Nabasa stressed.

Filbert Ocailap, the Resident District Commissioner, encouraged residents to strengthen security in their communities through neighborhood watch systems and prompt reporting of suspicious activities. He emphasized that cooperation between security agencies and local communities is vital to sustaining peace.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Francis Chemusto, Commandant of the Anti-Stock Theft Unit, warned against early marriages, which contribute to instability in the region. He emphasized the importance of addressing social issues while working toward long-term security and development.

The baraza was attended by several high-ranking officials, including Brig. Gen. Wilberforce Sserunkuma, Deputy Commander of the 3rd Infantry Division, Col. David Byaruhanga, Commander of the 405 Brigade, and other key local and security leaders.

The leaders collectively urged the community to commit to peacebuilding efforts, emphasizing that sustained stability is critical to unlocking the region's economic potential and improving quality of life for residents.
