The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has provided financial assistance to families affected by the tragic shooting in Paimol village, Agago District, on October 20, 2024. The incident, involving Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier Private Ameny Bonny, resulted in the deaths of three people and injuries to three others.
The support was delivered through Deputy CDF, Lt Gen Sam Okiding, who handed over 5 million Uganda shillings to each family of the deceased and 3 million to those injured. Lt Gen Okiding expressed regret for the incident. “We are deeply sorry for what happened,” he said, reaffirming the UPDF’s commitment to supporting victims and ensuring justice. He also emphasized the importance of accountability and pledged the army’s full cooperation in addressing the tragedy.
During the event, Lt Gen Okiding encouraged local parents to prioritize education as a means to empower the community. He urged them to leverage government programs, such as the Parish Development Model, to alleviate poverty through agricultural ventures.
Brig Gen Keith Katungi, Commander of the 5 Infantry Division, commended the community for its role in maintaining peace, particularly in addressing cattle raids. He, however, stressed the need to tackle poverty and hunger, which remain prevalent challenges in the region.
Agago District Chairperson, Opio Leonard, lauded the UPDF for its swift and transparent response. “From covering burial expenses to fulfilling their financial pledge and offering an apology, this is a rare and commendable gesture,” he said.
The victims of the shooting were identified as Akidi Santino (47), Apiyo Sunday (21), and Ajal Florence (16).
Private Ameny Bonny, the accused soldier, is set to face trial at the Division Court Martial in Paimol village on November 19, 2024.
