As Uganda gears up for the annual Martyrs’ Day celebrations on June 3, police have issued a call for vigilance from all pilgrims making their way to the Namugongo Shrine.

Rusoke Kituuma, police spokesperson, said: “We urge all pilgrims to remain alert, keep in touch with their groups, and carry some emergency funds in case of any eventuality.”

Each year, thousands walk from across Uganda and neighbouring countries, stopping at churches, schools, and community centres along the route. The pilgrimage brings together people from all walks of life and draws large numbers of local and international visitors.

The movement of people also brings economic opportunities, with many vendors selling food, religious items, and offering transport and accommodation services. However, this also attracts individuals with criminal intent.

“We are aware that such gatherings can draw thieves, imposters, and rowdy youths,” Kituuma added. “Police, alongside other security agencies, will be on high alert with patrols, surveillance, and medical teams in place.”

One of the main concerns during the period is traffic congestion. Police advise motorists to be patient and considerate, as diversions will be in place to manage the flow of people and vehicles.

Parents have a role to play too. “With so many people around, children can easily get lost,” Kituuma warned. “Guardians should keep a close eye on their children at all times.”

Pilgrims are also advised to carry identification documents to help authorities assist them quickly if needed.

Medical emergencies and separation from groups are common, so staying connected and prepared is key. “Simple steps like carrying some money and a phone can make a big difference,” Kituuma said.

As the nation prepares to honour the Martyrs, police pledge to ensure safety and order throughout the season of events leading up to the main day. More updates on security measures will follow.
