President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has commissioned a cassava processing factory in Nakasongola as part of his ongoing tours to promote the Parish Development Model (PDM) in the greater Luwero region.
The factory, which has been operational for three years, processes cassava into starch used in several industries including food, paper, pharmaceuticals, textiles, briquettes, and packaging.
Currently, the factory employs 130 people and provides a reliable market for cassava farmers. Over 1,800 individuals earn income by supplying raw cassava to the plant, creating an economic ripple effect across the region.
While officiating the commissioning, President Museveni commended the factory’s proprietor for transforming cassava into a high-value commodity. He said the initiative is in line with the objectives of the Parish Development Model, which seeks to raise household incomes through agro-industrialization.
“You are not only adding value to cassava, but you are also helping households move from subsistence to commercial agriculture,” President Museveni said.
He noted that Uganda’s development depends on such grassroots investments that connect local production to industrial markets. The President encouraged more Ugandans to embrace value addition and tap into PDM opportunities to create sustainable livelihoods.
The factory is expected to play a key role in rural industrialization by increasing cassava’s economic potential and stimulating local enterprise development.
