The Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC) has signed an Early Project Activities Agreement (EPAA) with VIVO Energy to fast-track the commercialisation of Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) from Uganda’s oil fields.

Signed on July 29, 2025, the agreement sets the foundation for technical and preparatory work necessary for UNOC and VIVO to jointly handle the offtake and marketing of Uganda’s LPG output.

The partnership will cover key activities such as Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) and feasibility studies. These are critical to preparing infrastructure that will enable Uganda to utilise its LPG resources from the Kingfisher and Tilenga oil projects, which are projected to produce 100,000 metric tonnes of LPG annually.

Under the joint venture, UNOC and VIVO will manage the government’s and UNOC’s share of LPG production, creating a domestic supply chain aimed at increasing access to cleaner energy sources.

Proscovia Nabbanja, the Chief Executive Officer of UNOC, described the partnership as a strategic move toward delivering sustainable energy to Ugandans. “This partnership with VIVO is a testament to our commitment to maximizing the value of Uganda’s petroleum resources while delivering clean and affordable energy solutions for Ugandans,” she said.

She added that the EPAA would enable essential early-stage planning to unlock LPG opportunities in Uganda’s upstream oil sector.

VIVO Energy CEO welcomed the agreement, noting that it would help promote accessible and sustainable energy. “This agreement formalizes our collaboration with UNOC and sets a strong foundation for public-private sector efforts to provide safe, accessible, and sustainable energy solutions to Ugandans,” he said.

The initiative is part of Uganda’s broader energy transition agenda, which seeks to reduce the country’s reliance on traditional biomass fuels such as firewood and charcoal. By promoting LPG use, Uganda aims to cut down on deforestation, indoor air pollution, and related health issues.

UNOC reaffirmed its commitment to working with partners to drive growth across the petroleum value chain and boost Uganda’s socio-economic development.
