The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has ordered telecommunications operators and internet service providers to restrict access to an unauthorised online platform that was publishing voter-related information without approval, citing the need to protect the integrity of the electoral process.
The directive, issued on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, followed a formal request from the Electoral Commission and was implemented under UCC’s statutory mandate provided by the Uganda Communications Act.
In a public notice, UCC said the platform was offering voter registration and voter location information without clearance from the legally mandated authorities, raising concerns about the accuracy and legitimacy of the information being shared.
The Commission said the restriction was intended to safeguard public information systems, ensure the orderly conduct of elections, and prevent the spread of content that could mislead voters.
UCC emphasised that the management of voter registration data, voter location details and all electoral processes remains the exclusive constitutional responsibility of the Electoral Commission.
“Any platforms or applications purporting to provide such services must be duly authorised and aligned with the law,” the Commission stated.
The regulator clarified that the intervention was administrative and preventive, not punitive, and was meant to enforce compliance with existing legal and regulatory frameworks governing communication and information services in Uganda.
UCC said it continues to work with relevant stakeholders to promote a secure, responsible and trusted communications environment, particularly during the electoral period.
The Commission urged members of the public to rely only on official channels designated by the Electoral Commission for voter-related information.
UCC reaffirmed its commitment to enabling safe, reliable and lawful communication services across the country.
