The Church of Uganda has backed the postponement of this year’s Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations at Namugongo following fears over the Ebola outbreak in the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo.
In a statement issued on May 18, 2026, the Provincial Secretary of the Church of Uganda, Rev Canon William Ongeng, said the decision followed consultations between the government, epidemic response authorities and religious leaders.
The annual celebrations had been scheduled for June 3, 2026 at Namugongo.
“The decision to postpone this year’s celebrations has been made in the interest of protecting the lives and health of pilgrims and the general public,” Ongeng said.
He said the Church recognises the importance of preserving life despite the significance of Martyrs Day on the Christian calendar.
The Church urged Christians, pilgrims, dioceses and organising committees to cooperate with the government directive and follow all health guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health.
Ongeng asked believers who had already started preparations and travel plans to remain calm and continue praying for the country and affected communities.
The Church also praised Uganda Christian University, which had been selected to organise this year’s Anglican Martyrs Day celebrations at Namugongo.
Ongeng commended the university leadership, organising committees, volunteers and partners for the preparations already made towards the event.
“We commend the University leadership, organizing committees, partners, volunteers, and all stakeholders for the tremendous preparations, commitment, and resources that had already been invested,” he said.
The Church said it will wait for further guidance from the government and health authorities on possible alternatives for commemorating the Uganda Martyrs in a safe manner.
It also appreciated health workers, security agencies and other stakeholders for efforts to protect the country during the current health threat.
